Innovation Champions Showcase goes pan-Northern

This year’s Innovation Champions’ showcase saw plenty of organisations networking and sharing ideas to spread innovation, with a particular focus on those that have been developed within the NHS and by clinicians.

Building on last year’s success the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN again partnered with North East and North Cumbria AHSN, The Innovation Agency (AHSN for the North West Coast) and Health Innovation Manchester. Around 65 delegates showcased NHS led innovations from across the north of England.

The day enabled Innovation Champions and Innovation Scouts, clinicians and medical professionals to share ideas and to hear about market ready innovations. Presentations were from experts including:

  • Stephen Radley, a consultant Gynaecologist from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with the Electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire.
  • Rob Cooper, Consultant Cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – 3D printing for heart surgery education. The hospital has used 3D printed hearts to assist in teaching, and in briefing patients about the surgery that they will be having.
  • Sameer Kothari, CEO from Zilco, with its product ZedScan, a diagnostic system used in cervical screening, developed in partnership with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Innovators from NHS organisations also presented posters on projects and innovations they are currently developing. Twenty posters were submitted and the winners were:

Yorkshire and Humber

The Sheffield Diagnostic Genetic Service at Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for its research into a new method of newborn screening to identify gene related disorders. The team was awarded a development fund of £500.

North East

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for its Cervix Visual Assessment Guide and

City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust – for its All About Me Boards.

North West Coast

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust for its implementation of Alivecor to identify patients with atrial fibrillation.
